FROM WORDS TO MUSIC

A short lesson to try.

  1. Say each name before searching. Ask learners which instruments they have heard or seen.
  2. Find the 15 words. Start on Easy for right-and-down paths; use Medium or Hard for a longer challenge.
  3. Sort the names into four sound-making families. Keep piano aside and discuss why it is a special case.
Try it:

Sort VIOLIN, FLUTE, TRUMPET, and TIMPANI into the four orchestral families. Then explain why piano can be discussed with both strings and percussion.

Teacher notes & suggested answer

Violin: strings. Flute: woodwinds. Trumpet: brass. Timpani: percussion. A piano has vibrating strings that are struck by hammers, so the classification depends on whether you focus on the vibrating material or how it is activated.

Do not classify instruments only by their material. A metal flute is still a woodwind. Let learners describe how the sound starts before naming a family.
